Halloween Costumes 2015

When I can, I love to make costumes!  Almost every year I have made my daughters' Halloween costumes.  Here are the costumes I made this year.

This year my oldest wanted to be Rapunzel.  I really enjoy making costumes but a huge reason for me making costumes for my kids is that the ones sold in stores are terrible most of the time, unless you want to spend a lot of money.  And many times the designs of the costumes, though licensed, vary too much from the characters.  Princesses are a great example.  What I hate the most is how short the dresses are.  It makes no sense whatsoever to me that they be that short.

Rant over.  I made Rapunzel's dress but not the wig.  I'm very picky so I'm not 100% happy how it turned out.  But it turned out well.  I added a lot of detail.  I sewed each stripe on the puff part of the sleeves.  Embroidered the end of the sleeves and trimmed them in lace.  The front of the top is fake corset tie up with ribbon.  Collar and bottom of top trimmed in light pink lace, bottom of skirt is trimmed in white lace.  I embroidered the designs on the skirt.  The dress has a zippered back.  Most important is that my daughter loved it!

My youngest decided to be the ninja turtle Donatello.  She is in love with the turtles!  Things I didn't make are the mask, boa stick, and back shell.  She already had all those items.  I decided to try and make muscles for this costume.  I used these two patterns to help me make it:

I used the superhero pattern to help me make the muscles and head cover.  I used the turtle pattern to make the front shell, elbow straps,  knee straps, and sash.  I sewed the front shell directly onto the shirt instead of using straps.  The costume came out a little big but I'm happy with how it turned out.  And that means she can wear it longer.  Also more importantly again, my daughter loved it!  After I made it I did find a Donatello costume that looked decent and was priced well at a Spirit Halloween store,  I had fun making this and I learned some new techniques though.
