Stuck on Prom
...is a scholarship competition that Duct Tape has every year, website. Basically couples make their dress and tuxedo out of duct tape and they pick a winner. I entered in 2002. I spent about $50 on duct tape to make everything, including the boutineer and corsage. So we saved a ton of money and had lots of fun. I blame not winning on everyone going patriotic that year and me going goth.
I went with a spider theme, spider on my back and web on his vest. I loved Spiderman and the night of the prom was opening night for the first movie, we actually got permission to leave prom early to go see it. The dress is 100% duct tape. The only fabric on it is a piece I glued to the inside of the chest for comfort. The tuxedo jacket is 100% duct tape. The shirt is taped onto the front of a t-shirt. The pant legs are all duct tape and then were duct taped onto pajama pants. I wanted everything to be 100% duct tape, and I misread the rules and thought they had to be, but I was worried about his comfort with the shirt and especially with pants. Before I submitted our entry I found out that you could just duct tape over a dress if you wanted but more consideration would be made if you used only duct tape. I made these by mainly making sheets of duct tape and cutting out a pieces and sewing them together. I made the boutineer and corsage with duct tape and wire. I made a stripe of duct tape folded over with wire inside on the top and bottom. I then bent it into and wrapped it around into the flowers. I wish I had a close up of the flowers.
Kids Costumes
I don't care for a lot of the cheap costumes they sell in stores for Halloween, especially if I can make something for around the same price if not cheaper. Plus I just love making costumes!
I wasn't sure what to do for my daughter's first Halloween. I went with Raggedy Ann. I loved the doll and cartoon and thought that it would be a cute costume. I was surprised she left the hat on the whole time. I used Simplicity pattern 4859
For her third Halloween, and my other daughter's first Halloween, I asked her what she wanted to dress up as. She said Princess! Then I asked what what color and she wanted pink. At JoAnn's I let her pick the color and she chose the hot pink. I tried to get her to pick the pale pink but she wouldn't budge. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Both dresses turned out great and they both and lots of fun wearing them. I based them off of Simplicity pattern 0414. I also created the tiara for my youngest. I wanted something soft and comfortable for her so I made up my own using a silver fabric, elastic, and extra trim from the dresses.
Easter Dress
For my eldest daughter's 2nd Easter I couldn't find any dresses that I really liked. So of course I decide to make my own. She looks good in green, and it's a good spring color, so I looked through my left over fabrics and found that I have a pretty sheer green that I had used to make a renaissance dress. I used a white cotton fabric underneath and make up my own design.
I love Easter bonnets so I made one to match the dress. I found a beautiful wide lace to use for around the brim.
Second Quilting Class
I took a second quilting class at JoAnn's. This time we made a slip pillow cover with a 1/4 dresden plate pattern.
I don't know what I was thinking when I chose my fat quarters but I think it turned out pretty good in a nice funky way. I decided not to sewing the zigzag edge down to give it a little more dimension. It was a fun and easy project.
I've done more costumes and different sewing projects but unfortunately I don't have pictures for them. But I'm sure I'll make plenty more!
