Princess Birthday Cakes

For my daughter's 4th birthday party she wanted her theme to be princesses.  I made two different cakes.  One for her preschool friends and one for her family party.

Castle Cake

My daughter wanted a cake with all the Disney princess and their princes on it.  I wasn't sure how I could do that.  Unfortunately not much is done with the princes, most only care about the princesses.  I told her we could do a cake with just princesses.

Disney Princess Little Kingdom Collection
I saw these little figures at Wal-mart.  I thought they would be good toppers and a nice extra gift.  After finding these I decided to do a castle cake with them on top.

I used fondant for the top of the towers and for the small roof in the front.  The rest is butter cream icing.  I used an airbrush for the first time to try shading the stone of the walls.  I used skewers under the princesses to help stand them up.

Sleeping Beauty Cake (Aurora)

I wanted to do something different for our family party so I asked my daughter which princess she liked the best.  Surprisingly she said Sleeping Beauty, for a long time Belle was her favorite.

I found princess cake toppers on Amazon.  It's just the bust, this is a cake example they show but it's only from the waste up.  It's not the greatest.  I think it looks like a drag queen dressed as Aurora, but it worked and was better than me trying to make one.  It's pretty small so I made the princess on top of an 8 inch cake.

Everything but the bust is cake and icing.  Aurora's skirt might make at most 8 servings, gives you an idea about how small it is.  I'm happy with both cakes.  I wish I didn't procrastinate my time when I did the castle one, but it still turned out alright.  Most importantly my daughter was very happy.
